What is Forest Hill Ice Skating Toronto (FHIST)?

FHIST is Forest Hill Figure Skating Club's new Special Olympics Learn to Skate program.

Who is the program for?

The program is open to skaters 10-18 years of age wishing to learn to skate who require more support than is offered in our traditional CanSkate program. As this is a Special Olympic program, participants must have an intellectual disability, cognitive delay, or a developmental disability such as, but not limited to, autism or Down syndrome. Participants will work on developing fundamental skating skills in a program designed for their particular learning needs.

Participants may have a support person (parent, sibling, friend, support worker etc.), who is comfortable on the ice, join them on the ice to assist in addition to our dedicated team of coaches and volunteers.

What can I expect from the program?

Participants in FHIST will work with our team of experienced coaches and volunteers in small groups to ensure we are able to meet each individual's unique needs.  The participants will learn the fundamentals of skating in a supportive environment and will build their skating skills as they progress through each level of the program alongside their peers.  As they advance, participants will have the opportunity to further explore figure skating through Forest Hill's annual ice show as well as Special Olympics figure skating events.
