Fall / Winter 2011 - 2012 Schedule: Sept 12 – April 8 (28 Weeks)








Membership Fees: A $32 Mandatory Skate Canada Membership fee is charged per skater, unless a skater is a registered member at another club and can produce a valid 2011/2012 Skate Canada Number.

Registration: Done on a first come, first serve basis. Registration will be closed for any session that becomes filled to capacity. No registration is considered complete until the club has received the completed and signed application form. Please also refer to our website for schedules. Guest Fees: Given ice availability, skaters may guest skate at the appropriate level for a maximum of three sessions. FHFSC members: $15 /hr, Non-home club members: $18/ hour.

Private Lessons: Ice fee not included Private lessons must be arranged on the session, which is appropriate for the skater (age level and skill level). Hockey privates to take place on Hockey Skills ice only.

Make-up Classes: We are sorry but there will be no make-up sessions due to limited ice availability.

Ice Use: The club reserves the right to change sessions or ice times without notice at any time during the skating season, and may pre-empt sessions for test days, competitions, and Demonstration Night.

Re-Surfacing: Should safety conditions require ice re-surfacing, the Club reserves the right to deduct the necessary time from any class in accordance with arena policy.

Overdue payments: The Board of directors may cancel the membership of a skater not in good standing. Overdue accounts include fees owed to a club coach for private instruction.

Behavior and Ice etiquette: The club reserves the right to remove any skater from the ice for disruptive behavior or actions that are deemed dangerous to the individual or to others, and/or, to remove any skater from the ice if that skater’s parent/guardian enters the ice surface, is disruptive or acts in a way that is deemed dangerous to the skater or to others. FHFSC may revoke the membership without refund. Appropriate skating attire required.

Helmet Policy: As per Skate Canada's helmet regulations all CanSkate and Adult Canskate participants up to and including Stage 5 must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice. This policy is enforced during all skating activities including competitions, carnival days and any other special on ice activities throughout the season. Although optional, helmets with cages/face guards are highly recommended for young skaters and beginner skaters of all ages. ADULTS MUST SUPERVISE ALL SKATERS UNDER THE AGE OF 8 WHILE THEY ARE ON THE ICE.

Forest Hill Figure Skating club offers CanSkate programs in various formats suitable for different types of skaters. CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. The Program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Skaters earn badges and other incentives while learning fundamental skating skills applicable to both figure skating and hockey. Lessons are given in a group format, led by a certified professional coach.

Start-Right

Start-Right is designed for skaters, ages 3-8, who have never been on the ice. This program consists of 45 minutes of group instruction with a coach to skater ration of 1:4. Skaters learn the basics – balance, falling and getting up, forward skating and stopping. Children are divided into groups based on age and skill level.

CanSkate

CanSkate is designed for skaters age 4-9 (by September 1st) with prior skating experience. Children are divided into groups by skill levels, from Stage 1 through to Stage 7. Skaters learn all basic skills, such as balance, skating forwards and backwards, stopping, and simple jumps and spins. Group size ranges from 8-10 depending on the level of expertise and the age of the children. (Please note, if your child will miss more than 2 classes please e-mail our office so that we can inform the coach.)

Pre-School and Mini-Tot

Pre-School (ages 3 - 5 years) and Mini-Tot (ages 2 - 3 years) is a CanSkate program similar to the Start-Right program, and is orientated to younger skaters, aged 2-5. This program is 45 minutes and is held during the day to match a ½ day at school. Group sizes range from 6-8 depending on the level of skating experience and the age of the children.

Hockey Skills / CanPowerSkate

Hockey Skills is designed for skaters age 4-9 interested in developing skating skills, which will improve their hockey ability. Skaters must have passed CanSkate Level 3 and have a good grasp on cross cuts, quick start and stop, two-foot turns, and stroking. No hockey equipment other than helmets and hockey skates are required. There will be one Hockey Skills group with a coach to skater ratio of 1:10.

CanPowerSkate is an action-packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to hockey and ringette skaters that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations.

CanPowerSkate provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for those athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams. Its unique skill award program provides incentives and motivation for skaters to continue to achieve.

CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards.

For safety reasons participants should wear full hockey/ringette equipment that is CSA approved. The coach to skater ratio is 1:10.

Double Digit

Double Digit is a CanSkate program designed for skaters age 10-16 with a coach to skater ratio of 1:10.

Adult Skating

Adult Skating sessions are for skaters age 17 and older who want to learn basic skating skills such as forward and backward skating, dance patterns, and simple jumps and spins. Groups will be divided according to ability. More advanced adult skaters are encouraged to join our advanced sessions.

Forest Hill Figure Skating Club offers both recreational and competitive figure skating programs. In order to qualify for Intermediate and Advanced Programs, skaters must meet the criteria outlined below.

Junior Development

Designed for aspiring figure skaters who are looking for more intensive instruction. The coach to skater ratio is 1:6 and sessions include structured time for free skate, skills, dance and stroking. This is a bridge program between CanSkate and Intermediate Sessions and skaters enrolled must have completed CanSkate Stage 4, but no higher than one preliminary test . Figure skates and skating attire are required. Skaters who have achieved their Stage 4 or above but are not interested in figure skating should enroll in a higher level of CanSkate or Hockey Skills.

Skaters are either in a lesson, which they have arranged directly with a coach, or are engaged in their own practice. The coach is in charge of the skater’s development, knowledge of ice etiquette, and Club procedures with the exception of the Junior Development groups. Criteria: Must have passed one of the 3 Preliminary Dances, OR Preliminary Skills OR Free Skate.

Pair Skating New

Is a figure skating discipline. The main goal of this session is to introduce pair teams as consisting of "one lady and one man." The sport is distinguished from ice dancing and single skating by elements unique to pair skating, including lifts, and throw jumps. The teams also perform the elements of single skating in unison.

Select

Select -- This is a special designation for CanSkate and JD skaters with added focus for those who are practicing min 3 hours a week. Intermediate and Advanced skaters who are skating 5+ hours with FHFSC would also benefit from this program.

Select members are considered full club members with unlimited guest skating on appropriate available sessions, and Early bird at no additional cost. This program is designed to recognize and encourage up and coming skaters who are choosing figure skating as their sport and is taught by our higher level coaches.

Teaching will go beyond technical proficiency to include grace, musicality, theatre, and preparation for competitions. Select skaters will work on programs in preparation for competitions such as, the Spins n’Spirals, Snowflake and FUNskate. All skaters are accompanied by a Forest Hill coach at competitions.

No charge for Select Skaters for Ticket ice and 50% off for all other skaters if registered prior to or on August 23 for the full season.
